poetry pt i. “to be”

you do not have to look a certain way to be who you are,

you do not need to wear a fur lined coat and drink tea out of clear glass mugs.

you do not need to wear shoes that hurt your feet nor do you need to smell like hydrangeas on a rainy spring morning.

to be who you are you do not need to discover something beautiful or write an autobiography

just as the finch does not yearn to sing a new song, or decorate his nest with golden thread. as the finch does not dye his feathers or buy a new pair of dress pants,

there is nothing that must be changed to simply be.

to be who you are you do not need to be known. to be who you are there is only one requirement, and it simply is to still your heart, lean into your body, close your eyes, and breathe.
